MPPT Solar Controller FAQ

Q: Can the output of the MPPT be used as a power supply, thus without batteries?
A: The answer is: it depends on the type of load.
During low current situations the MPPT control bandwidth is too small to be able to maintain a stable voltage. The result is that loads that need to see a stable voltage before they can activate or loads that require a certain “under voltage” to active will not be able to run.
Loads where under voltage does not apply, like light globes, can be operated without any problems.
Q: What is a charge controller’s rating?
A: A charge controller is rated by the current it can accept from a PV array to charge batteries and the battery voltages it will support (e.g. 60 amps for 12, 24, and 48-volt batteries).
Q: Are MPPT controllers worth it?
A: MPPT controllers provide more power, especially in colder temperatures. They can also be used with less expensive 60 cell modules which are usually unsuitable for PWM controllers. Weighing these benefits versus the lower cost of a PWM controller will determine if an MPPT controller is right for your system.
